I went to Martin Mere today for the 5th time in seven days hoping to finally
catch up with the short-eared owl that has been present for a couple of
weeks. I managed it, but turns out it wasn't even the highlight of the day,
that honour went to three newly arrived Bewick's swans on the mere, my first
on the reserve since 2011. What a turn around, on 23/12/1990 I recorded 818
Bewick's on the mere. Those days have long gone.
It was always a dull day today and the swan photos were taken on my phone
after sunset so I'm delighted with how they turned out, and the short-eared
owl, well I never thought I'd manage to get a photo of one at Martin Mere so
very pleased with that as well!
Both the ring-necked duck and the glossy ibis were still present.
My first short-eared owl at the mere was in 1979 and my last prior to today
was 2011.
