With very limited time this afternoon I got lucky with both a 1st winter male smew on Southport marine lake and a greater snow goose at Marshside, thanks to a tip off from Graham Clarkson. The smew was virtually point blank range from the Floral Hall car park and the snow goose was not much further away on Sutton Marsh. Both showed almost immediately with no hanging around. Earlier the ring-necked duck showed even better at Martin Mere and was a bonus after "Sail to Santa"!
Both the smew and the snow goose turned up while we were in Cyprus so this was just a catching up visit.
