Hi Colin , really excited as ive not bee doing any birdwatching for ages but went for a walk this afternoon up to Billinge Hill (I live nearby). It was very quiet , 4.30pm, and had just started raining.I was walking on te muddy track from the hill towards the midden pile (1/2 way between the hill and the golf course) and I saw a bird low down in the grassy small hillocks. Ive never seen either before but know for sure it was either a stonechat male or whinchat. Ive just been looking on the rspb birsite and going from their map distribution of both birds think it has to be a stonechat aswhinchat is given as sumer only. Like I said ive never seen either beforebut can u confirm that stonechats have been seen around here as .like I say.ive never seen one?
ReplyDeleteHi Andrew, yes it could well be a Stonechat. I've seen a few in St Helens. There numbers have fluctuated a bit, at one time they were quite rare, then they became uncommon, but these days they seem to have gone quite rare again. So yours is a good record. Very unlikely to be Whinchat, they are summer visitors and I wouldn't expect to see them until the beginning of May, though this has been a funny year with quite a few summer visitors over wintering.
