It may seem from reading this blog that birding is easy and great sightings just fall into my lap. However, I don't tend to write about the darker, more frustrating times, when I can spend hours seeing very little. The fact is sometimes the birds just don't perform as expected and it can become a real grind.
A combined total of twelve hours spent this weekend looking at two arable fields at Lea Park in Lincolnshire failed to produce the Little Bunting which has been in the area for at least a week. Why stay so long you might well ask. Well you pass a threshold where you have invested so much time in seeing a bird that another hour doesn't seem to matter and it seems a pity to go because you definitely won't see it if you do, and there's a fear of the bird being seen just after you leave, then the hours start racking up, and before you know it you've spent all day there. Anyway, it was still nice to be out in such lovely sunshine, and great to see the first butterflies of the year. If it was a bit closer to home I'd be back again tomorrow. It's days like this which make you truly appreciate the good days!
