It was a lovely evening at the mere, with the highlights being the displaying grebes and a singing Chiffchaff. In the photos below, notice that one of the birds has its tail erect like a Ruddy Duck (remember them :-( ). I've never noticed this before. As it happens I think that in this case the bird with the raised tail is the male, but I'm not sure if it is always the male or if it could be either or even both.
