A fairly calm but gradually worsening morning, we did our usual rounds, starting at Northbay and then moving to Cleat.
Hebridean starlings are easily the commonest birds on Barra and the 1st winters are particularly striking birds.
Another wheatear at Cleat this morning. With the Barra breeding population
having left the island by the end of August, these later birds are thought to
be Greenland birds.
The winds picked up this afternoon and the rain arrived, turning torrential at
about 2pm. By late afternoon the wind was even stronger but the rain stopped
for an hour so we headed to Eoligarry jetty and watched from the car. Not many
birds about, but plenty of kittiwakes and gannets over the sea and a snipe
tried to land on the beach but thought better of it!
This evening Storm Amy is battering us with ever strengthening winds, forecast to peak at 86mph in about one hours time. Lets see what tomorrow brings....
