Caspian Gull in the roost and an immature Whooper Swan

In the Pennington Flash roost this evening, a cracking sub-adult Caspian gull was new in. It's got everything and really stood out from the other gulls, long-necked, long parallel bill, white headed, dark beady eye in a pair shaped head, slim and long winged. A really nice bird and the first adult or near adult Caspian gull that I have found at the flash.

Yesterday an immature whooper swan was released at the flash by the RSPCA and this morning was on the grass at the back of the lorry park at Sorrowcow farm, and then this evening roosted at the yacht club. Since swans usually migrate in family groups rather than on instinct as is the case with passerines etc., I do wonder if releasing it at Pennington Flash was a mistake. It seems likely to me that this bird may now remain in the area for the foreseeable future because there are no other regularly visiting flocks of whoopers for it to join up with.

Also today, 11 goldeneye including five drakes and 10 pochard including five drakes.

A beautiful morning.
