Praia de Faro is a glorious walk along a lengthy and spectacular beach with the crashing waves of the open Atlantic ocean. Our holiday to this part of southern Iberia always starts here and the walk continues over the footbridge across the saltmarsh, along the edge of the golf course and back to the car via Ludo salinas. Dramatic though the beach is, it can seem a fairly quiet place for birds at times but in actual fact there are plenty of very special birds around.
Kentish plover are numerous on the beach once you get away from the resort. I love the way they dig themselves down into the sand to escape the wind.
Beautiful birds!
Don't forget to check out the gulls overhead, the beautiful and rare Audouin's gull is no stranger here, in fact on this trip we saw more than ever before, with a double figure count flying along the beach and in the vicinity of Praia de Faro.
Sanderling running from the waves.
There are also plenty of yellow-legged gulls either on the beach or flying over.
Out at sea gannets and sandwich terns are a regular sight, and probably a decent variety of other sea birds on stormy days, but I'm rarely here in such weather so can't really comment on what could be expected.
