Alvor and Cape St. Vincent
Alvor is just to the west of Portimão in the western Algarve. It's a really good place for birds with a large saltmarsh and impressive board walk, and the town itself is picturesque and worthy of a visit.
Bluethroats are regular winter visitors to the saltmarsh at Alvor, we saw at least two. This I think is a 1st winter bird.
Just outside Alvor is the impressive view point at Praia de João de Arens, one of the most impressive coastal locations I've been to anywhere. Scenically I'd say this beats the Great Ocean Road in Australia.
These holes are just immense, you certainly wouldn't want to fall down one!
There were a lot of yellow-legged gulls on the cliffs, I'm not sure if they breed here but it looked a distinct possibility.
Lupins at Alvor.
If there is one genus of flower which gets me really excited it's the narcissus genus. This is Narcissus papyraceus Paper-white narcissus growing near Alvor
.......and look at this stunner, Narcissus bulbocodium Yellow hoop-petticoat daffodils at Cape St Vincent.
This is also a beautiful plant, Silene colorata pink catchfly at Cape St Vincent.
Cape St Vincent is a magnificent place on the extreme western point of the Algarve. It's a good place for birds such as black redstart, blue rock thrush and in summer Alpine swift. We also saw red-billed chough here.
