Year 185 (Wood Warbler, Redstart)
We walked from Patterdale to Howtown on the eastern shore of Ullswater, and the views were spectacular all the way. There were several male Redstarts singing along the route, and they are always great birds, but the star of the day for me was the Wood Warbler in Hallinhag Wood on the side of Hallin Fell. Beautiful little birds, I love the way the bright yellow on their throat contrasts with the snowy white under parts, and their song is the soundtrack of upland ancient woodland in spring. It's always a good, uplifting day for the soul if there are Wood Warblers about! We caught the steam ferry back to Glen Ridding.

Two views of Ullswater from the ferry.
