Russian white-fronts at Martin Mere

The same weather systems that brought yesterdays Bewick's swans to the Mere have also brought an influx of Russian white-fronted geese into the country, and these two adults were on Plover field today.

It was another great day at Martin Mere, with a supporting cast of short-eared owl, glossy ibis and ring-necked duck, plus two great white egrets, 24 cattle egrets and a couple of little egrets. Also, at the Janet Kear hide I caught up with a partially leucistic reed bunting. No sign of the Bewick's swans today though.

Meanwhile, at Southport a green-winged teal was on Inner Crossens along with the greater snow goose and at least one ringtail hen harrier over the outer marsh. All goose photos today were phone scoped.

This partially leucistic reed bunting has caused some confusion over the past week or so, with at least two claims of snow bunting originating from this bird.
