Pallid harrier, Mandria

After 11 days in Mandria during which time I searched and searched but failed to find my main target for the area, a ringtail pallid harrier which has been present for a couple of weeks, today on the day we leave for the UK, it flew past the apartment and dropped into the field opposite!

I'd actually packed away my binoculars and camera and had given up birding for the holiday, but then I had to nip to the local chippy to pick up a take away lunch an hour before we left for the airport, so I got my gear out again just in case and this was the result! One of the highlights of the trip. Then I had to explain to Elaine why the lunch took so long.....

It was worth it though, because what a cracker of a bird this is. Pallid harriers are the best harriers and 1st winter, which I think this is, is the best plumage. A stunner! Safe to say I was made up with this. The whole episode just confirmed to Elaine that I'm obsessed.

Wow! I love this photo.....

.... and this one. Pale and unmarked underwing coverts.
