Photographing any flying insect is a challenge to say the least, but
dragonflies do at least give you a chance because they are large and hover a
lot. Southern hawkers in particular are very curious and will come close to
you to see what you're all about!
Another good collection of species at Bickershaw today, nothing new but nice
to get a few more photos.
Male southern hawker.
Male common darter.
Male broad-bodied chaser.
Male emerald damselfy.
Dragonflies spend most of their life underwater as nymphs before finally
crawling onto a bit of vegetation and emerging as an adult. These alien
looking things are the exuvia, the exoskeleton or skin of the nymph which is
left behind when the adult emerges. It is possible to identify these to
species, but I haven't got round to that yet with these. They were about 1cm
long, so obviously something small like a damselfly.
