A tough day battling through nettles and thistles and ditches to bring in static bat detectors was at least rewarded with a singing quail. In fact there was plenty of bird activity including a hunting male marsh harrier, a common sandpiper and lots of warblers, especially sedge, reed and whitethroat.
Lots of dragonflies were on the wing, including many banded demoiselles, broad-bodied chasers, black tailed skimmers and common darters. Butterflies included painted ladies, red admirals, meadow brown and small tortoiseshell, and there were hundreds of silver y moths.
