Juvenile Cuckoo. Not great photos, but you can clearly see the white spots on the tail and the white spot on the nape. This is the first Cuckoo I have seen in St Helens this year.

Wow. Nice one Colin. I'd love to see one in St Helens.
ReplyDeleteDairy Farm Road is usually a good place for Cuckoos, in fact I find it the most reliable site in St Helens, but this year I hadn't seen or heard any before today. Good to see a juvenile, hopefully it's a local bird.
ReplyDeleteFor the Cuckoo, park near the conifers at the by-pass end of Dairy Farm Road. Walk down the road towards the Old Coach Road. Eventually you'll come into some trees with a few buildings and a turning on your left. Go past the turning and after about 100 yards there is an open area with cables overhead. The bird was on the cables to the left of the road.
ReplyDeleteFor the Curlews, continue to the Old Coach Road and turn left. Walk for about half a mile until you see a grassy field on your right. The birds gave been in this field.
