Today we headed for Posto Florestal Fanal, with it's ancient, twisted
laurel trees. One of the most amazing places in Madeira. Madeira chaffinches
are common here and will show very well, I guess that they're used to the visitors and today I had them almost walking over
my feet! Really lovely birds.
Looks like a scene from Lord of the Rings.
Apparently there's an ancient volcanic crater here which fills with water in the winter. I'm guessing that this is it.
Later we stopped off at Ribiera de Janela to see the magnicficent stacks.
There was a dead juvenile gannet on the beach which had been partially covered
by somebody. Apparently there are about two gannets per year recorded in
Madeira.
