This morning we called in for another try with the Pallas's warbler at Heswall in the hope that the rare commodity which is sunshine might persuade it to show better, but it was as unobliging as ever, and we had to be content with two poor views which amounted to about one second out of the two hours we were prepared to give it. At least it wasn't raining today, and the supporting cast of up to six chiffchaffs did the honourable thing and entertained us as we waited in vain for the prima donna to show itself.
Two hours was the most we were prepared to spend at Heswall today, because we had other places to get to. We picked up a few year ticks elsewhere, including purple sandpiper at New Brighton, long-eared owl at burton mere wetlands and great white egret at Burton Marsh, Denhall Lane.
