A morning on the Ormes

I was up early this morning and on the Great Orme for 6:30 to see the sunrise, then parked up near the limestone pavement and had a walk looking for migrants.

There were several wheatears about which were probably new in, since I was also here on Saturday and didn't see any. Less obvious migrants today included two flocks of woodpigeons totalling 65 birds and several small flocks of meadow pipits totalling about 50 birds, all in off the sea. A single swallow flew east.

On the drive up I kept stopping and scanning the sea and was delighted to see my first kittiwakes of the year. Auks have been on the water in good numbers and occasionally on the cliffs since the middle of February but these are the first kittiwakes that I have seen this year, though obviously I don't come to the Orme more than a couple of times a month and have just been to Cyprus for two weeks, so they may have been around for a while. Also on the sea several gannets.

This is the small quarry above the lighthouse where I've seen the occasional migrant in the past, but not today.

The Conwy estuary.

Later in the morning after breakfast we visited the Little Orme, from where you can can get spectacular views over Llandudno and the Great Orme.

There were around 65 grey seals in Angel Bay on the Little Orme.

A swallow, three sand martins and another male wheatear were about the best of the migrants here.
